What Is Bright Business?

Most businesses that go to market never sell. Effort is rarely the reason. The owner decides alone, against no system, with nothing holding the decision afterward. Bright Business closes those three gaps.
Boarding pass: Peers. System. Accountability. What is Bright Business? From deciding alone to a business that runs without you.

Ask the owner of a $3M business how the year is going and you usually hear the same answer. Revenue is fine. The calendar is full. And the business still can’t run for a week without them.

That is not a time problem. It is a decision problem, and it shows up in the numbers.

The pain
The business runs on you

According to the Exit Planning Institute, only 20 to 30 percent of businesses that go to market actually sell.1 For many owners, about 80 percent of their wealth is tied up in that business.2 And in EPI’s 2023 national survey of more than 1,100 owners, three out of four said they want to exit within ten years.3

Put those together. Most owners plan to leave within a decade. Most of their wealth sits inside the business. And most businesses that try to sell, don’t.

A buyer isn’t buying your effort. A buyer is buying a business that runs without you. Behind almost every business that can’t, we find the same three gaps.

Gap 01
No system to decide against

In most growing businesses, the operating system already exists. It lives in the owner’s head. That is exactly why it can’t be delegated, improved or sold.

The Bright Business Operating System (BBOS) puts it on paper. It has four pillars: Purpose, Inner-Leadership, the Solution Matrix and the Business Matrix. Each month the Clubs work on one topic/process from those pillars, so over twelve months the whole business gets built, piece by piece. Every decision runs through the same loop: assess, strategize, prioritize, execute, measure, improve.

Six diagnostic variables roll up into one BBOS System Score, from 0 to 100. Progress becomes a number you can check, not a feeling you hope is right.

Gap 02
Nobody with context in the room

Owners rarely lack contacts. What they lack is someone who knows the business well enough to say the hard thing. When Harvard Business Review surveyed 165 CEOs, the loneliness they reported came less from missing connections and more from missing support, and it peaked when results turned bad.4

The Bright Business Club is a standing monthly room: the same people, month after month. Each club holds up to 20 members, with one seat per expertise and no competing businesses in the same room. The owner brings the challenge. Peers bring experience. Experts bring capability.

Clubs meet in San Diego at Kiln on the first Thursday, in Costa Mesa at Serendipity Labs on the third Thursday, and online. Members sit in a room that matches their stage: Room One for businesses up to $1M in revenue, Room Two for $1M to $5M, and a third room opening soon. Experts sit at the same table in either room. That way a $4M owner isn’t solving a $400K owner’s problems, and the $400K owner gets peers who are exactly one step ahead. One rule is said out loud at every meeting: nobody sells in the room. Business happens between members afterward, and it does.

Gap 03
Nothing holding the decision afterward

A good meeting ends. Then the urgent beats the important, and by next month the decision has quietly expired.

The research on this is plain. In a study by Dr. Gail Matthews at Dominican University of California, 76 percent of people who wrote down their goals and sent a weekly progress report to a friend accomplished them or got at least halfway. Among those who only thought about their goals, it was 43 percent.5 Writing it down helps. Reporting it to someone helps most.

Bright Brain is that weekly report, built on BBOS. It takes about two minutes a day: a Morning Brief, an Evening Log, a Weekly Report and a Monthly Movement. It tracks your BBOS System Score, a valuation range and your exit readiness, with seven agents working from the same system. Every month ends on one Leverage Move (Power Move): the action with the greatest leverage before you meet again. Club members also meet online on the fourth Thursday for their accountability check-in.

Three gaps, three answers Owners stall for three reasons, and each has an answer. No system to decide against is closed by BBOS over a 12-month map. Nobody with context in the room is closed by the Club every month. Nothing holding the decision afterward is closed by Bright Brain every day. The three run together, not in sequence. Three gaps. Three answers. How it fits
One system, three tempos

These are not three products you buy one after another. They are one loop. BBOS is the map. The Club is the room where you test your thinking against people who have been there. Bright Brain keeps the decision moving in the 29 days between meetings. They run at the same time: daily in Bright Brain, monthly in the room, and over twelve months on the map.

Every paid plan includes Bright Brain. What a Club membership adds is the room itself: the seat, the monthly meetings and the people in them.
